I am launching a series of publications exploring the topic: "What if the solution to the skills and talent shortage could be found in Finnish and international virtual teams?"
I hope this series provides new insights for organizations already utilizing virtual teams, as well as for industries where virtual teams have yet to be implemented—despite no real barriers preventing their adoption.
1. Introduction
Face-to-face interactions remain important, but isn't it time we fully embrace the possibilities of digital collaboration?
Just a few years ago, organizations made enormous efforts to advance digital expertise and competitiveness. In a short period, we made huge strides in leveraging digitalization. Yet today, some organizations seem to be stepping back. Others, however, continue to develop their virtual teams—progressing forward while integrating skilled professionals into their organizations, regardless of location.
Failing to utilize virtual teams where feasible comes at a cost. Organizations should evaluate their own financial impact:
· What is your revenue or balance sheet total?
· How much does a shortage of even a single employee affect financial
results?
· What is the cost of a poor recruitment decision?
· How does talent capital impact future competitiveness?
Perhaps flexibility is the answer—widening the search for talent beyond local constraints.
